The day of

A nasty Saturday Seattle morning. I woke up about 20 times last night; anticipation regarding the trip... Was planning to hit the road around 8 and pulled out of the driveway at 11. I discovered a "design flaw" that required yet one more visit to the local hardware store.

Cole and I had lunch with cousin Brett at our new favorite Portland Taco place - ¿Por QuĂ© No? .
I haven't really interacted with Brett as an adult. You know how you see someone as a child because they were kids when you hung out with them many years ago. They're grown now (of course) but you still think of them as kids. Until you start talking, really talking and you realize - this is a wonderful, sensitive, responsible young man. For many years he was a semi-pro bodybuilder (not to say that bodybuilders aren't wonderful, sensitive and responsible people) and did a great job of making us all feel guilty about how little time we spent at the gym. As he prepares to get married in Sept, he's more focused on finishing his degree in Public Health and getting into Grad school.

Good work Brett!

After leaving Portland, we made our way to Tualatin, Oregon. Deciding to spend the night in the Cabela's parking lot. Extensive research on the web + confirming with a Cabela's employee it was ok, seemed to guarantee success. At 1:45 AM, 2 security guards who couldn't have been more than 16 years and a few days old informed us we were mistaken. The did offer that the Fred Meyers across the street allowed overnight camping and we weaved our way there through torrential rain and the brain fog that comes from sleeping in a car in a Cabela's parking lot.

The following morning was a milestone as I was able to summon all of my outdoor cooking skills and make coffee on the new pull out stove rig. I'm not sure what the other folks in the Fred Meyers parking lot thought who saw this, but whatever, as Cole says - "it's the way of the road"!
